Some of the best Brook and Brown trout water in Northeast Wisconsin is found on the 1st South Branch of the Oconto. It's spring feed and runs through pristine forest and meadow. The land that's along the bank is primarily national or county forest land with little to no development. The GBTU and the DNR chose this particular section because it currently contains smaller Brook Trout and we wanted to create an ideal habitat and holding area for larger Brook Trout. Since GBTU worked on this portion of the river in past years and extensively in 2010, the trout habitat both upstream and downstream has been enhanced. Some of the work performed on the site includes: brush bundling, large log placement for water diversion, and beaver dam removal. Our efforts made the channel narrower, deeper and faster.
